WHY THIS LESSON?
The correct use of apostrophes in writing is a ‘tip-off’ to parents of middle school students that extra work may be needed to master the very basic rules of usage. This lesson will help parents understand any strengths and deficiencies.
This lesson can be used for upper elementary students, or for secondary students who have not mastered the basic usage rules and need more practice.
Bottom line: this is an important skill to master early and one in which upper-grade deficiencies need to be remediated.
Apostrophes are used in both contractions and possessives.
Of these two situations, possessives are the more difficult. It is the one area where more students make mistakes on standardized tests and compositions. Students who reach high school and have not mastered these skills will pay a penalty. And remediation is not generally a part of a high school curriculum.
Here is an easy way to teach possessive apostrophe use, with one easy-to-remember rule. Practices and key are included.
This lesson explains:
- Common contractions, with examples
- What a “possessive” is, and why we use them so frequently
- A clear explanation of how to make possessives of words that don’t end in “s” (These are mostly singular nouns, but not always)
- A clear explanation of how to make possessives of words that already end in “s”
- A practice exercise on changing words into possessives
- A second practice exercise on spotting words in a paragraph that do not use apostrophes correctly
