ABOUT JAKE MADDOX NOVELS

Jake Maddox has written a series of short, high interest novels based on sports stories. Their vocabulary level is appropriate for grades 3-5. However, the high interest levels, the age of the characters, and the sports themes make them ideal for slow, reluctant, or emerging readers in grades 5-7 as well.

This 12-question, multiple choice test is mainly based on plot synopsis and character motivation and can be used as a reading check. One question is a higher-order question based on theme. Answer key is included, and a vocabulary lesson and practice is also included.

Note: The Jake Maddox Novels are of high interest to junior high students because of the content which focuses on young sports heroes. If your student is a struggling, below-grade-level reader in middle school, these novels can be a successful path to achieving grade level going forward. They are also excellent for ESL English language learners.

(This does require you to obtain a copy of the novel, but they are widely available in most school and public libraries.)

Note: Middle School Up Literacy has quizzes for 26 of Jake Maddox’s short novels. All of them have a multiple-choice quiz, a vocabulary lesson, and an answer key.

  • 4 Lessons, each with 10-12 short paragraphs with funny-sounding words and context clues
  • An impoverished vocabulary is a huge problem for many struggling students in middle school. Sometimes even a dictionary offers little help; these students often don’t understand the dictionary definition.
  • Figuring out meaning from context clues may be the best skill and strategy possible for these students. However, practices and worksheets can also be frustrating for the teacher because you don’t know which students already knew the vocabulary words. Did your student get the answer right because he figured out the word from context — or because he already knew it?
  • This lesson is practically guaranteed to avoid that problem. It uses words that sound like nonsense words but are actually real words. Very few of your students will know these words ahead of time (they include bamboozlekerfluffle, googolplex, troglodyte, bumfuzzle, macaronic, biblioklept, and more!) However, the sentences surrounding the words have lots of context clues, so you and your students can truly have a “pure” experience of figuring out the meaning of an unknown word from context.
  • Students can have a laugh at these goofy-sounding words as they do this lesson. Save 20% with this bundle.
  • Answer keys are all included.
