This is designed to be an important instructional lesson that students seem to really enjoy.

16 Oldies Pop Songs Lyrics and 23 questions on figurative language:

Most pop songs are poetry set to music.

“Oldies” songs in particular, are often chock-full of sound effects and figurative language: alliteration, onomatopoeia, similes, metaphors, personifications, and more. Kids usually enjoy looking and listening for these elements in pop songs more than they enjoy looking for them in actual poems.

You won’t have to worry about kids listening to or reading the lyrics of these 16 classic oldies from the 60’s and 70’s. They are written and performed by iconic musicians such as Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkle, and the Beach Boys.

This lesson contains the lyrics to 16 oldies pop songs, followed by 23 questions that ask students to find things like metaphors, similes, rhyme schemes, and alliteration in them. It is suggested that you play the songs (available free on You Tube while your child is taking the test.

This is a ‘tried and true’ lesson that works well AND teaches an important ELA skill.
