Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson, tells the story of 13-year-old Isabel. As the Revolutionary War begins, Isabel is fighting a battle for her own freedom and that of her sister Ruth. After being sold to the cruel Lockton family, and then being approached to spy for the Patriots, Isabel must decide what freedom really is, and what kind of freedom is worth fighting for.

Many students miss revise-and-edit questions that require them to know where to put in commas with “interrupters” — especially, appositives.

This is a different kind of instructional approach to help students master an important skill that is commonly used in many forms of writing including tests that students will take in school.

This lesson explains what an appositive is and is not, in a high-interest way, with numerous examples. It also explains where to use commas with appositives. It finishes with a page with several practices combining separate sentences into one sentence with an appositive.

So, what is an appositive?

It is a noun or noun phrase that renames a noun. It adds extra detail to a sentence, but it is NOT essential to the meaning of the sentence. The correct use of commas is an important part of this writing technique.
