WHY THIS LESSON?

Of all the grammar usage skills, incorrect of use of capitalization is one of the most obvious signs that one’s skills need help. This lesson helps parents identify such problems. It helps parents provide their children with instructional strategies that are effective.

This lesson is mainly for upper-elementary students or secondary students who need review or remediation.

Capitalization is the most basic of usage skills, yet students often do not use it correctly on essays. Students often miss questions involving this topic on standardized tests.

WHY THIS LESSON?

ABOUT JAKE MADDOX NOVELS

Jake Maddox has written a series of short, high interest novels based on sports stories. Their vocabulary level is appropriate for grades 3-5. However, the high interest levels, the age of the characters, and the sports themes make them ideal for slow, reluctant, or emerging readers in grades 5-7 as well.

This 12-question, multiple choice test is mainly based on plot synopsis and character motivation and can be used as a reading check. One question is a higher-order question based on theme. Answer key is included, and a vocabulary lesson and practice is also included.

Note: The Jake Maddox Novels are of high interest to junior high students because of the content which focuses on young sports heroes. WHY THIS LESSON?

The correct use of apostrophes in writing is a ‘tip-off’ to parents of middle school students that extra work may be needed to master the very basic rules of usage. This lesson will help parents understand any strengths and deficiencies.
