  • 4 Lessons, each with 10-12 short paragraphs with funny-sounding words and context clues
  • An impoverished vocabulary is a huge problem for many struggling students in middle school. Sometimes even a dictionary offers little help; these students often don’t understand the dictionary definition.
  • Figuring out meaning from context clues may be the best skill and strategy possible for these students. However, practices and worksheets can also be frustrating for the teacher because you don’t know which students already knew the vocabulary words. Did your student get the answer right because he figured out the word from context — or because he already knew it?
  • This lesson is practically guaranteed to avoid that problem. It uses words that sound like nonsense words but are actually real words. Very few of your students will know these words ahead of time (they include bamboozlekerfluffle, googolplex, troglodyte, bumfuzzle, macaronic, biblioklept, and more!) However, the sentences surrounding the words have lots of context clues, so you and your students can truly have a “pure” experience of figuring out the meaning of an unknown word from context.
  • Students can have a laugh at these goofy-sounding words as they do this lesson. Save 20% with this bundle.
  • Answer keys are all included.

ABOUT JAKE MADDOX NOVELS

Jake Maddox has written a series of short, high interest novels based on sports stories. Their vocabulary level is appropriate for grades 3-5. However, the high interest levels, the age of the characters, and the sports themes make them ideal for slow, reluctant, or emerging readers in grades 5-7 as well.

This 12-question, multiple choice test is mainly based on plot synopsis and character motivation and can be used as a reading check. One question is a higher-order question based on theme. Answer key is included, and a vocabulary lesson and practice is also included.

Note: The Jake Maddox Novels are of high interest to junior high students because of the content which focuses on young sports heroes. If your student is a struggling, below-grade-level reader in middle school, these novels can be a successful path to achieving grade level going forward. They are also excellent for ESL English language learners.

(This does require you to obtain a copy of the novel, but they are widely available in most school and public libraries.)

Note: Middle School Up Literacy has quizzes for 26 of Jake Maddox’s short novels. All of them have a multiple-choice quiz, a vocabulary lesson, and an answer key.

Of all student usage “sins,” writing run-on sentences is probably the most common, and one of the most grievous. Composition graders grit their teeth when they see this obvious sign of a lack of sentence control.

On multiple-choice assessments, including state assessments and the SAT, many questions are based on a student’s knowledge of how to spot and avoid run-on sentences.

This lesson gives numerous examples, plus examples of the three ways to fix a run-on sentence. Two practice worksheets are added after the lesson.

WHY THIS LESSON?

Effective writing is the combination of multiple skills. Using figurative language is an important strategy and quality that middle school students need to understand and master before high school. This basic lesson starts that process.

This is a basic lesson for students who are still puzzled about what “figurative language” actually means. It explains how figurative language describes something NOT in a literal way, but as an image instead.

It gives several easy examples with complete explanations. It also explains the difference between simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, and idiom, with examples for each.

Examples. Explanations. Practice worksheet – Advanced Grades 7-8, High School grades 9-10.

The author Orson Scott Card wrote: “Metaphors Have a Way of Holding the Most Truth in the Least Space”.

An interesting metaphor is powerful indeed: it marks a thoughtful and mature writer.

Students who can write metaphorically on essays and applications score higher and make more of an impression than those who write only literal statements.

However, it takes practice to get into the habit of thinking and writing in metaphors.

Students need more than a simple definition and one or two examples. They need numerous examples of varying difficulty.

They also need practice describing what a metaphor literally means, and they need to create a few metaphors of their own. This lesson provides detailed explanations, many examples, and a thought-provoking practice exercise.

Paraphrasing Published Works of Writing or Literature Is Effective Writing – Paraphrase but Don’t Plagiarize

Junior High Paraphrasing Lesson — Paraphrase, Don’t Plagiarize! – $2.50

DIRECT LINK:This lesson is copyrighted. It is sold with the agreement that its use is restricted to members of one family unit designated by the purchaser. It may not be shared or redistributed to other users or otherwise made available publicly in any other medium or publication. Purchaser and user fully agree to these terms and conditions.

https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Junior-High-Paraphrasing-Lesson-Paraphrase-Dont-Plagiarize-5654518

WHY THIS LESSON?

Let’s be candid. Claiming that one wrote as specific passage of words – even carelessly – when someone else actually wrote those words is one of the major mistakes a student can make. This lesson help students understand how to correct use the published works of others to make their writing more effective.

Junior High is often the time students are asked to write a report or a research paper of their own. While many students now know how to do research online, it is a fuzzier picture when it comes to taking notes and paraphrasing the information.

This lesson clearly explains what paraphrasing means. It gives several examples of a paragraph from a research site, with a possible way to paraphrase that paragraph. After the examples, students are given six short paragraphs (2-3 sentences each) and asked to paraphrase those paragraphs.

Students get into serious trouble (grade-wise) when they plagiarize someone else’s writing. This lesson includes very practical advice with supportive lessons.
